Sustainability | Using flannels instead of makeup wipes

Hello everybody!

Continuing with the sustainability series, today I’m sharing my second step I have done to improve and be a little be more sustainable while doing my skincare and in life as well.

My first action was to switch to bar soaps and I explained it in detail in this post. My next step was to switch from using disposable makeup wipes to flannels. I have been using flannels for almost 2 years now and I’m loving it.

To give you a bit of a background, in the past I used makeup wipes for 2 reasons: one was to remove my makeup in the evening and to remove and clean my hands and tools when applying my makeup in the morning. That meant that in 1 year I was using on average 500 wipes. I was so shocked when I saw the number.

I decided to reduce my use of wipes as much as possible, So I decided to do the following actions:

To remove my makeup (and to cleanse my skin)

I use a flannel or wash towel, and a balm or oil cleanser. I bought a set of 8 flannels in a local store. I used 1 per each day and the 8th one I used it when I’m do in the laundry of the other 7th. You can buy them in bulk in any store and they are super affordable. This already gave me 3 benefits; first I eliminate the waste of using a wipe everyday, I’m saving a little bit of money of buying wipes every month and my skin is super grateful, as using a balm or an oil is way much better that using a wipe.

To clean my hands and tools after I applied my makeup in the morning

Every time I applied makeup I used one wipe to clean my hands and, bottles, skin etc., to have everything clean and nice every day. Then I realized I can still do that by not using a wipe. So I decided to change and using a flannel to clean my tools and my hand I will use soap.

For that I bought these flannels from Primark very cheap and great and I wash them with my laundry and they worked perfectly. My routine is still the same the only thing I changed how I clean and reducing my waste!.

I still use wipes occasionally

As I mentioned in my previous post, I’m not pretending to be perfect or live a “free waste” life, because in my view is not possible. What I’m trying to do is to reduce as much as possible, so when I generate waste is in a mindful way.

Yes, I still use wipes occasionally. The only moments I use them is when I don’t have access to water, for example on a road trip, travelling, etc. They become very practical in those situations.

But by reducing the use of wipes on my daily life, allow me to me more sustainable and be more conscious in the situations that I will need to use them.

Again, my motive behind this is do little steps to be more conscious of our resources. while enjoying my lifestyle.

Hope this post was helpful

Have a great day!
