Ingredient of the month: Vitamin C

What is Vitamin C? Vitamin C usually called Ascorbic acid (one of the many forms that can comes) is an essential nutrient for our bodies. We can ingest Vitamin C or apply it topically.

What are the benefits? Wow it has so many benefits!, It is a great antioxidant that prevents aging of the skin by fighting free radicals caused by UV radiation, Boost collagen production, and helps lighten hyperpigmentation, significantly improving hydration, and keeping your skin looking younger for a longer time.

It comes in different % concentration between 10% to 25%. The strength will depend on how your skin can tolerate it. i my opinion using a vitamin c between 10%-15% is going to be effective and good for your skin. If you need a boost you can use a product with higher concentration.

When to use it? It can be used morning and night. I personally like to use it in the morning, after I cleanse my face

Is it safe for all skin types? Yes, but I will avoid using on compromised skin: open wounds, acne, eczema, etc. But if you have doubt always check with you facialist or doctor.

What precautions should I take? Vitamin C is very unstable in its purest form, that is why so many companies come ups with many forms to products the vitamin C serum. As it is very unstable it oxidizes very quickly when is exposed to air. So, when you purchase your serum take this into account:

If it comes in a serum form, it should be almost clear color. When it starts to oxidize it will turn orange to brown. This is when you should stop using, as the serum will not have an effect in your skin anymore. Also pay attention that the packing of your VC serum has to come in a dark color, to prevent exposure the serum to light, to preserve it longer you can store it in your fridge.

If it comes in lotion form, it usually lasts longer but are usually the lower % on vitamin C in it.

My opinion: I called the Superstar. It is a beautiful ingredient that has a lot of studies that proves its anti-aging effect on the skin. This is a must ingredient that you should include in your daily skincare regimen. As I have dry skin (with a lot of pigmentation), I see how soft and brighter my skin is when using it in my regime. The product that I’m currently using, and loving is: Kiehl’s Vitamin C serum (12,5% Vitamin C)..

Do you use Vitamin C? What is your favorite serum?
